‘Jesus’  – What is the meaning of the name

The proper name Jesus ˈdʒiːzəs used in the English language originates from the Latin form of the Greek name Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous), a rendition of the ישוע. It was given by the angel at the time of the Annunciation, and means ‘God saves’. It expresses his identity and also his mission ‘because he will save his people from their sins’ (Matthew 1:21). Peter proclaimed that ‘there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we can be saved’ (Acts 4:12). Jesus means in Hebrew: ‘God saves.’ The name ‘Jesus’ signifies the very name of God is present in the person of his Son, made man for the universal and redemption from sins. It is the divine name that unaccompanied brings salvation, and henceforward all can invoke his name, for Jesus united himself to all men through his Incarnation, so that ‘there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’
