This year’s pilgrimage is focused on discovering God’s mercy in our lives. We need to keep him before our eyes. You may have noticed over recent years, God disappearing from society, from culture, from the economy, with few interested in God. This retreat will help us bear witness God exists and is always with us.
If you have never been on a pilgrimage, don’t worry, a residential pilgrimage, is an experience that is ultimately relaxing and recuperative. It is an essential journey, externally, giving the pilgrim time and space to think and to pray, and internally seeking to renew and strengthen the individual’s faith, and so it is also a precious inner spiritual journey.
A pilgrimage is an intimate, particular and solely individual bidding from God, and encompasses His offer and our acceptance of that offer. It is consequently a walking toward God; travel as sacrament even though in essence, we have been on pilgrimage since the day of our birth, and will be until we go to our rest; it is a moving toward God, which is sacramental. Our travel comprises the essential outward element, and our increasing intimacy and proximity to God comprises the critical and indispensable interior element.
Individuals undertake a pilgrimage for myriad reasons, but you first must acknowledge every step taken will have rich meaning. We go to embark a ritual journey with sacred purpose, some questions of your life’s purpose perhaps, or purifying your heart to seek clarity where presently there may be confusion, perhaps some desire to calm your mind and find stillness and solace. Some may seek to increase, refresh or renew their faith, to practice prayer, to pursue inspiration, to learn to let go, to offer a problem to God, to pray for all types of healing for self and others. Some may be doing penance. Some seeking a new outlook on life, others, learning new methods of meditation. And of course, some come purely in thanksgiving. Yet others looking for some form of change, and frequently that change take place on pilgrimage. Some individuals just will not know why they are undertaking a pilgrimage, but are obeying their senses, instinct and intellect. Yet others may simply require a break from their routine forms of devotion.
Pilgrimage also means focusing on an intention, a desire perhaps, or a resolution to a situation. The pilgrim travels because they hear or sense the precise call to find peace.
