A Family Easter Celebration:

United with you in Love

We didn’t want it to be just another Church service. We wanted to create the atmosphere of love and community with our neighbours so we invited them along for an event where we would all learn a little about how other cultures celebrate Easter and have family fun at the same time.

A booklet was made that included some of the customs and practices from Poland, Spain, Germany and, of course, Scotland.  Being the main Christian celebration of the year it was interesting to learn how each of the countries celebrated the religious part, especially Spain where the celebrations are so public.

The family customs were interesting too.  Each country used eggs in different ways.   Some were hard boiled, decorated then eaten on Easter Sunday. Others incorporated them into a cake.  Another practice was to ‘blow’ the eggs, paint the shells and use them for decoration.  Rolling eggs down a grassy hill on Easter Sunday morning was yet another custom.

Our celebration began with a short service in our little Church to bring everyone together end remind ourselves of the significance and importance of the day.

After that it was fun time – and Easter egg hunt with a difference!  Some time was spent before everyone arrived, going round the grounds ‘hiding’ strands of wool of different colours in branches, bushes, benches and any other suitable place.  The task was to find a piece of wool, bring it back to the start point, exchange it for a task and only when the task was completed did you get an egg.  This could be repeated as many times as you had energy for and as many tasks as you could complete. The tasks involved word searches, word puzzles and for the younger ones colouring in pictures. All ages took part and it was the most hilarious afternoon – all made better by the beautiful sunshine that day. As with all celebrations, food, especially cake, is important.  We finished our afternoon with tea, juice and cake. It was a wonderful event and the families all had a wonderful time.  Some asked if we were going to repeat this again next year as they had really enjoyed the day.  Others commented that the atmosphere was really ‘family like’ and thanked us for inviting them.
